Should You Spring for Travel Insurance? By Bill Protresi
If you do any type of flying these days you know that there are many places offering to write up a travel
policy for you, and sometimes the price of this is inconsequential but at other times it can be rather significant. Someone that flies or travels only sporadically such as an occasional vacation may not give it much thought, but if you travel frequently or are planning a very expensive or lengthy trip, you may want to consider purchasing travel insurance. Why do we say that?

A big part of the coverage of most travel
policies is refunding or reimbursing you the cost of your ticket and other expenses if you need to cancel your trip for any reason, or if the company you should be traveling with (your cruise line, sightseeing tour company, etc.) cancels it.
Some trips that are planned out can cost literally thousands of dollars for the ticket, and if you have an expected occurrence such as an illness or death in the family your travel company may not be obligated to refund this cost to you. Purchasing a travel
policy with your ticket insures that cost in case of an unexpected or unforeseen emergency.
Some travel
policies are also supplemental to your own health
in case you get sick or injured while traveling; oftentimes your own health
carrier has limits on what they will reimburse you for when out of your local area. This is something to consider especially if your trip includes any particular risks, such as for rock climbing, hang gliding, skiing the mountains, and so on.
Purchasing travel
is a personal decision but one that should be considered carefully and cautiously.
